What is fever?
Fever is a defence mechanism the body uses to fight infections, and is therefore frequently associated with childhood illnesses. A body temperature that is consistently above the normal temperature range is called a fever.
What is the most accurate way to measure temperature?
The goal of thermometry is to measure ‘core body temperature’, which is the temperature of the vital organs such as the heart or brain. Skin temperatures are not always reliable indicators of core body temperature – skin is a tool the body uses to lower fever (ie. through shivering), and can also be influenced by factors such as medication, clothing and ambient (room) temperature. Oral temperatures are influenced by drinking, eating and breathing, while rectal temperature lags behind changes in body temperature and can be impractical.
Ear temperatures accurately reflect core body temperature, since the eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature control centre in the brain, the hypothalamus. Temperature changes are reflected sooner and more accurately in the ear than other sites.
What is normal body temperature?
Normal body temperature is unique to each individual and itranges from 34.8 C to 38.0 C, depending on the body site where the temperature is taken.
This normal range is influenced by many factors such as physical activity, but it also varies throughout the day. The normal temperature range tends to decrease with age. To define your and your family members normal temperature, measure temperature several times throughout a day when you and your family are healthy. These temperatures can be then compared to readings in case of suspected fever.
