Otovent® is designed to treat low pressure (partial vacuum) in the middle ear in children aged three and above, as well as adults. Used in over 20 countries, the Otovent® method offers an effective, non-surgical alternative to ear tube insertion, with clinical evidence supporting its benefits for both children and adults.
How it works
Based on a modern adaptation of the Valsalva and Politzer techniques, the Otovent® method helps open the Eustachian tube and restore pressure balance in the middle ear.
Key features
Two-way action
The method uses both inflation and deflation phases to support Eustachian tube function:
-
Inflation phase: the balloon is inflated through one nostril, helping to open the tube
-
Deflation phase: air flows back from the balloon into the nostril, further assisting pressure equalisation
In around 70% of cases, the inflation phase alone is sufficient. It is recommended to start with this step and only introduce the deflation phase if needed.
Easy and child-friendly
Many children find the process enjoyable, as it involves blowing up a balloon. This playful approach can improve cooperation and make treatment easier to manage. The visible inflation of the balloon also helps parents confirm that the technique is being performed correctly.
Supports self-treatment
Older children can learn to use the device independently, allowing them to carry out and monitor their own treatment safely.
Clinical studies and widespread use have shown no significant adverse effects. When used correctly, the Otovent® method can effectively help children with conditions such as secretory otitis media (otitis media with effusion), with around half of users experiencing improved or normalised middle ear pressure.
